CONCEPT DESIGN
The“ living Bridge” sited across the River Spree in Berlin, Germany explores the hybrid station of Pedestrian activity, Performance Space and Green/Live Pockets. The Bridge is conceptualized as the hub of an activities with art, culture and education spaces.
The topology of the “Living Bridge” is driven through differential vectors/ velocities based on varying speeds of pedestrian, recreational activities. These “Sinous” line are interpolated through the length and with of the bridge allowing user. The Bridge attempts to “ reflect” the varying topological condition of the river Spree itself by “riding” along a crest of adaptable space driven by its topology. The smallest denominator of the bridge is the “box”. The box performs the role of “structure”, “surface” and “container” exhibiting sustainable technologies such as rain water harvesting, green space in addition to its primary role as a “socio-culture connector” across the river spree.
SITE PLAN
Modularity
The Bridge has been designed as a modular system that could adapt to
varied spans, lengths and incrementally expand thereby sensitizing itself
to time / budgetary constraints. It is largely composed of 2 “types” of
modules, 5 numbers each. The walkway could be flanked by “event”
spaces on either side or a single side.
Technology
The structural system consists of a galvanized, anti-corrosive steel bridge
design, pre-fabricated in controlled shop environments. The abutment is
reinforced cement concrete which also acts as a retaining wall flanking the
edge of the River Irwell. This shall be in consultation / co-ordination with
the Master Plan and material design guidelines as outlined by the relevant
local codes and compliances. The surface of the pedestrian bridge is
composed of hard and soft landscape elements.
